Aspect ratio is the shape of a video frame — width divided by height. Modern TVs and phone landscape video are 16:9 (1.78:1). Smartphones in portrait mode capture at 9:16. Cinema is usually 2.39:1 ("scope") or 1.85:1 ("flat"). Old TV and computer monitors from the 1990s were 4:3. Vertical short-form video (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) is 9:16, the inverse of TV.

Why this matters for a product: aspect ratio mismatches are one of the most visible UX problems in video. Play a 16:9 video on a phone held vertically and you get tiny letterboxed content with huge black bars. Play a 9:16 portrait video on a TV and you get a narrow strip in the middle. Force a 16:9 video to fill a 21:9 ultrawide monitor and faces get stretched. None of these look professional, and the fix has to be made at production or playback time — there's no clever encoder setting that papers over it.

Practical strategy in 2026. Multi-aspect publishing is standard for any content with broad reach: shoot or master in one aspect ratio, then crop/reframe for the destination platform. Many tools (Premiere Auto Reframe, DaVinci, AI-powered services) do this semi-automatically by tracking the subject. Object detection-aware encoders can mark the "important" subject region so a player can intelligently crop on the fly. Adaptive aspect in some video players (CinemaScope on Disney+, for example) switches between aspect ratios per scene. The simple but slightly painful answer: produce content for the aspect ratio of where most of your audience actually watches.
