PPE detection (personal protective equipment detection) checks whether people in view are wearing required safety gear — hard hats, hi-vis vests, masks, gloves, safety glasses — and flags those who are not. On a construction site, factory floor, or clean room, it watches entry points and work zones and raises an alert or logs a violation when someone appears without the mandated equipment. It is a workplace-safety and compliance analytic rather than a security one.
It works by detecting a person, then checking for the presence and correct wearing of each required item on that person, often class by class (helmet on head, vest on torso). Results can drive a real-time prompt ("no hard hat at gate 2"), a gated interlock, or a compliance report over time. Importantly, it detects equipment, not identity, so a basic PPE check is generally not biometric data — though pairing it with who the person is would change that calculus.
The pitfalls are angle, occlusion, and the cost of a wrong call. A vest hidden by a turned back, a helmet that looks like a hat, poor light, or a distant view all degrade accuracy, which is a range and never 100%; over-sensitive settings nag workers with false violations and breed alarm fatigue, while lax ones miss real ones. The sound deployment uses good camera placement for the specific gear, tunes the threshold to the genuine safety risk, and treats alerts as prompts for human confirmation, not automatic punishment.
