How we replaced Apple's voice processing with a neural network because of Spatial Audio.

A macOS dictation app shipping into a Whisper-style transcriber. VPIO worked on three machines and silently dropped the first 3-6 seconds on the fourth. CoreAudio said the channel count was 6. The mic is mono. Here's the chain that got us from intermittent bug to wrong default architecture.

  • SetupmacOS dictation app, AVAudioEngine, VPIO for noise suppression. Worked on three of four test machines.
  • SymptomFirst 3–6 seconds of every recording silently dropped. No errors at the app layer.
  • InvestigationHotkey latency → AGC ramp-up → AEC convergence. Three wrong hypotheses, then the CoreAudio logs.
  • FixReplace VPIO with a dedicated neural-net noise suppressor. One-way capture has no echo to cancel anyway.
  • TakeawayIf your app captures audio without playing it back, don't use VPIO by default. AEC adds risk with zero benefit.
